Giles Waterhouse, who leads Marine Results’ NDT Division made a presentation at the Advanced Engineering Show at the NEC, Birmingham in November. The presentation was in support of the British Institute of Non Destructive Testing (BINDT). Giles also spent time on the BINDT stand during the show to help the organisation promote formal training within the industry.
The presentation was entitled The Application of NDT in the Marine Industry and covered the various techniques that Marine Results uses. Giles explained Penetrant Testing/Ultrasonic and Phased Array Testing/Pitch Catch Resonance/Thermography. He illustrated the applications across the various boats that the company can inspect including motoryachts and sailing yachts, masts, decks, hulls, keels and appendages. He also examined the material types which include monolithic GRP/CFRP, sandwich construction with foam/nomex and metallic.
The talk included further analysis techniques such as destructive analysis and a framework for defect management and resolution offering a decision flow path for acceptance, monitoring, repair and re-examination.
