The massive refit on the 75.9m (249ft) rig of 58.4m (191.6ft) luxury world class sailing yacht Kokomo III is complete.
Rigging and NDT specialists Marine Results were breaking records in Mallorca last autumn when the company unstepped Kokomo’s rig, the tallest rig ever to be removed from a yacht on the island in October, as part of the service.
The work was carried out at STP Boatyard in Palma, Mallorca by a team from Marine Results led by Jon Morris. Jon commented “This is a very tall mast and we believe that it is, in fact, the tallest ever to be unstepped and restepped in Palma. We had to specify the crane size to STP who had to bring in a special crane from mainland Spain to unstep. The same crane then returned to restep the rig as there is none suitable on the island of Mallorca.” Kokomo III’s mast was built by Southern Spars in carbon fibre, and is stayed with Nitronic 50 rod and EC6 carbon stays with a lifting weight of 21 tons
Kokomo III’s rig underwent a complete inspection in accordance with a five year service plan. Marine Results, who are NDT (non-destructive testing) and rigging specialists, carried out the work which included inspecting all components using advanced NDT techniques, and replacing any wearing or faulty components. The team also had to remove all the fittings so that the mast could be painted by Rolling Stock. The mast is now restepped and the refit is complete and the yacht is ready for the new season.
