Marine Results are increasingly carrying out pre-purchase inspections of masts for large yachts that are nearing completion. Examples include a large catamaran at Sunreef Yachts, building in Poland. “A baseline survey provides data for quality control purposes which can be compared with any future inspections,” says Giles Waterhouse. “Insurers are requesting these reports and this is leading to the demand from manufacturers to hold the baseline data for in case of any future issues that could be caused by collisions, lightning strikes, etc.”
The company is also helping one of the largest UK motorboat manufacturers with validation of surveyors reports, as well as providing NDT consultancy, and support for after sales service work, across several boats 35 – 55m range. “We are surveying motor boat hulls, which are already sold to their owners, but where hull damage has been referred back to the manufacturer for assessment or repair,” says Giles.
NDT is also being carried out on individual components, prior to any boat construction. Working for a couple of south coast composite component builders which are producing high spec grand prix race boat components, as well as parts to the F1 motorsport and aerospace markets, Marine Results is testing the components for flaws, as part of the quality control work process. Components include moulds, appendages, rudders, canards and dagger boards.
