Marine Results project manages new carbon rig for resurrected Maiden

Specialist superyacht rigging, systems and survey company Marine Results has been selected to supply rigging systems to the iconic round the world yacht Maiden during her complete refit for her new life as part of Tracy Edwards’ Maiden Factor project.  Maiden, which is once again hitting headlines, achieved international fame when she took part in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World race with the first ever all-female crew on board.

Marine Results is managing the project using Seldén Mast to supply the carbon mast, with rigging from Ocean Yacht Systems and hydraulics from Harken UK.

The Marine Results team has designed the specification for the rig and rope package, working with Tony Castro Yacht Design.  Together they have produced a rig plan which can be controlled by fewer crew members than the original full ocean going complement, and one is easier for onboard guests to handle.

Built back in 1979, the 58ft Maiden returned to the UK in June 2017 in a neglected state and is being brought back to top condition ready for her new role on The Maiden Factor, a campaign to raise awareness and funding for girls’ education around the world.

“It is quite a nostalgic experience to be involved in this high profile project,” comments Jon Morris of Marine Results.  “Maiden and everything that the original campaign achieved has such a memorable history.”

Maiden, which is proud of sourcing as many products and services as possible from within the UK, will be fully commissioned by May 2018 before her relaunch at St Katherine’s Dock in June 2018.  After attending Cowes Week Maiden will embark on three-year world tour, inspiring another generation and sending a strong message that every girl has the right to an education.
