The 156 ft (47 metres) performance sailing yacht Hyperion has just undergone a full mast refit, as part of a required 8 year service. While in Newport Shipyard, Marine Results un-stepped her massive 59 metre carbon fibre rig to carry out a full service and inspection.
The rig was put back in during November, and Hyperion has now gone to the Caribbean for the charter season. She will also be taking part in the St Barts Bucket superyacht regatta in March 2012.
There are two videos available of the recent work undertaken, one of the un-stepping of the mast and one of it being put back in. Filmed over a time lapsed period and speeded up, the footage shows just how complex a job of this type is, and how much plant and machinery is involved, as well as people.
The rig exerts some 200 compressive tons at the base. She has 59 km of wiring and 13.000 square feet of sail area.
