Double mast job for Perini Jasali II
Marine Results has finished an exceptionally large scale job on the 53m Perini Jasali whose rig was pulled out in the summer during a major refit in La Ciotat, France. We fitted new custom furling extrusions for the headstay and main and mizzen sail systems.
We also carried out a full service, including everything from fitting new LED navigation lights to a rigging service in accordance with the OYS 8 year service.
Jasali then went on to enjoy the summer’s sailing season, and despite everything now being fully up to standard the rigs came out again, this time at the Pendennis shipyard in the UK, to enable the yacht to have an engineering refit during the winter of 2011/12. Marine Results will then be called back to re-rig the yacht. |

Huckleberry gets full mast service in the snow
Marine Results has recently completed a full mast service on the beautiful 39.75m ketch Huckleberry (formerly Victoria of Strathearn). Built in 2001 by Alloy Yachts and designed by Langhan Design, Huckleberry was given a full mast service by Marine Results at Newport RI during February 2011. Our team at Marine Results, which has a fully mobile operation capable of going anywhere in the world, took our rigging service and four of our experts to the Newport dockside where we hauled out the masts, and fully inspected them, including the OYS rods. We serviced the Navtec hydraulics and also specified and supplied new rope work. Much of the work was carried out in thick snow but we weren’t put off and the job was speedily completed!

Hyperion’s rig pulled on film
The 156 ft (47 metres) performance sailing yacht Hyperion has just undergone a full mast refit, as part of a required 8 year service. While in Newport Shipyard, Marine Results pulled out her massive 59 metre carbon fibre rig to carry out a full service and inspection.
The rig was put back in during November, and Hyperion has now gone to the Caribbean for the charter season. She will also be taking part in the St Barts Bucket superyacht regatta in March 2012. There are two videos available of the recent work undertaken, one of the un-stepping of the mast and one of it being put back in. Filmed over a time lapsed period and speeded up, the footage shows just how complex a job of this type is, and how much plant and machinery is involved, as well as people.
The rig exerts some 200 compressive tons at the base. She has 59 km of wiring and 13.000 square feet of sail area.

World’s tallest aluminium mast gets Marine Results inspection
Marine Results has carried out a rig inspection on the tallest aluminium mast in the world, at 75 metres. The mast belongs to Salute, a 56 metre cutter built by Perini Navi and designed by Ron Holland.
The mast was un-stepped at the Perini yard in La Spezia, and the Marine Results team worked alongside Luca Sandrelli of Perini’s mast division to complete the inspection on the mast and rigging systems.
The mast will be re-stepped later this year when all the service works are completed. |

A unique inspection task on Maltese Falcon
Marine Results have proved that they are amongst the most specialised superyacht riggers in the world, by securing yet another contract with the massive 289-foot three-masted sailing yacht Maltese Falcon.
The team carried out a full inspection service of the rigs and performed routine maintenance of each of the custom built JP3 500 tonne bearings, which lie at the deck level of the huge masts, and which the mast rotates on.
Maltese Falcon’s innovative DynaRig sail design allows the masts to rotate depending on wind direction. Each bearing allows the mast above it to rotate under extreme load.
This has been the first inspection of its kind, which was needed for insurance standards and has to be carried out every 100,000 miles or 5 years.
Marine Results undertook the full visual inspection in La Spezia, and the team will continue to undertake ongoing rigging work on the boat when she arrives back in her home port Malta.
As well as working on the rig, Marine Results are inspecting and replacing components on the tender lifting system and yards for the yacht’s tenders. |

A turnkey service package for La Cattiva
Marine Results has just completed another milestone rig refit to the 122ft (38m) luxury cruising superyacht La Cattiva.
Launched in 1990 La Cattiva was a mega yacht ahead of her time. Designed by Ed Dubois, she was the first superyacht to be built at Pendennis shipyard. In 2006 her rig was completely replaced in a far reaching turn-key package, project managed by Marine Results.
Now the yacht is in Taragonna, Spain, where she is undergoing a major engineering refit during which we serviced the rods and all components. She is shortly to be re-launched and our team, who always see every project through from start to finish, will carry out sail trials to ensure that everything is fully operational. The project is another example of Marine Results’ flexibility and mobility.
The company designed a fully operational base to undertake the work, moving a container, trollies and all necessary tooling into place. |

Marine Results continues successful relationship with Mirabella V
Marine Results revisited the world’s tallest sloop rig in the autumn, that of Mirabella V, when the team carried out a full re-tune and one year service, as required by the yacht’s insurance underwriters. The giant 98 metre 46 tonne rig was inspected and serviced at Newport Shipyard, in RI.
Marine Results also removed the cylinder of the yacht’s vang. This alone is 9.5 metres long and weighs 900 kg, and is capable of pulling 112 tonnes.
We serviced and renewed some parts, and pressure tested and refitted it. We managed to complete the work in two days, which the captain was very pleased with.
Mirabella is a regular client for Marine Results. When the yacht was first rigged we worked as part of the original rigging workforce on this highly specialised rigging programme, due to the huge sizes and loads involved.
We have returned to the yacht a number of times, including when we carried out the four-year service in 2008, a routine inspection according to warranty conditions, which involved a major un-stepping and dismantling task to carry out remedial and repair work. |

Marine Results lowers Hetairos’ rig to get under 28m high Itchen bridge - June 2011
16th June 2011: Most vessels passing under the 28m (92ft) high Itchen bridge at the top of Southampton Water in Woolston can get under it with ease but when the 42.85m (140ft) classic ketch Hetairos was making her way to the yard at Southampton Yacht Services for a refit her 45 metre main mast and 36 metre mizzen mast had to be removed. Hamble based rigging specialists Marine Results used their expertise not just to oversee this part of the operation but to look after the rig throughout the refit. Just two weeks ago the Marine Results team raised the rigs once again as, with the refit completed, the ocean sailing pedigree was on her way south once more, this time on her way to the Mediterranean.
Marine Results provided the full rigging service as part of a major refit programme for the yacht, including a full service NDT (Non Destructive Testing) inspection, an application in which the company’s personnel are qualified specialists. Marine Results inspected the many components and carried out a rod service, as well as repainting the masts and booms.
The NDT process, which is carried out under ultraviolet light searches for stress, cracking and fatigue in rigging components.
“We were very pleased to be chosen for this contract following a successful tender, to carry out the rigging aspect of the Hetairos refit,” commented Marine Results’ Jon Morris, who himself has sailed on the yacht as race crew and rig consultant for a number of years.
Jon and his team from Marine Results also made a thorough rig inspection during sea trials once the re-rigging was complete.
Hetairos was built by world renowned shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen for world cruising and superyacht racing. She has cruised to the four corners of the world, including Alaska, New Zealand Madagascar, Greenland, Spitsbergen and the South Pacific. Her shallow draft of 3m with raised centreboard allows great flexibility for cruising, accessing shallow anchorages and harbours. But with the centreboard lowered to 8.7m she is a performance sailer and has won numerous titles, including the Superyacht Cup and Spirit of Tradition Class at the Rolex Maxi Worlds. |
Biggest sail battens ever made delivered to Mirabella V - May 2011
A set of battens, the largest of which measures 24m, was delivered by rigging specialists Marine Results to the megasized Mirabella V. Picture it - one long batten, the length of the average mast on a 46 foot racing yacht - and that’s long. Making a single batten 24 metres long is no mean feat, and when Marine Results was given the task of replacing the original set of battens in Mirabella’s mainsail, because they kept failing, it was a question of designing something that was tougher, more flexible, and with a longer life. |
|
 |
The battens are now fitted into a brand new massive 1557m” (16,760ft”) mainsail, supplied by Doyle Sails, which was used for the first time last month when Mirabella raced at the St Barths Bucket superyacht regatta.
The team at Marine Results designed the necessary specification and then called in engineers who were able to design the fabrication of the battens, numbering twelve in total (six and six spare). The battens were tubular and made of high-strength carbon fibre in an epoxy resin matrix. Because of their length they had to be transported in lengths under 12m and were then joined together on site. The diameters of the battens varied - the top batten was 72mm diameter and the bottom batten 93mm diameter.
Jon Morris of Marine Results, who led the project, commented “We believe these are the longest sail battens ever made, so it was quite a challenge to ensure that we could meet Mirabella’s brief, which quite simply stated that a tough structure was needed which was not prone to breakage. With the help of our engineering partners we have delivered to specification.”
Completed in 2004 and still the largest single-masted yacht in the world, Mirabella measures 75.22 metres (247 ft) and her mast stands 88.5 metres (292 ft) high from the water, that’s just 50ft short of the length of a premier league football pitch.

Marine Results demonstrates the full package service with Swann 77 rig re-fit - May 2011
In a demonstration of its full turnkey package capabilities Marine Results has supplied the mast, boom and rigging package to veteran Swan 77 La Forza del Destino. The yacht, restored to total racing form, then promptly went on to win Class 3 CSA at the St Maarten Heineken Regatta in March this year. Formerly called Desperado, she was the first Swan 77 to be built, and she has gone on to make a name for herself at many international events over the last couple of decades. “The project on La Forza del Destino is a good showcase for Marine Results’ unique service. As an independent company we have the ability to source and manage the best products for the yacht, and unlike rigging companies dedicated to selling branded equipment we deliver from a number of different mast and rigging companies,” explains Ed Danby of Marine Results. “We look for best prices combined with best quality, because we know that owners are much more conscious these days as to how their money is being spent.”

Perini pair gets Marine Results rig treatment - May 2011
Marine Results has just finished working on the rigs of two Perinis at their base in La Ciotat, France. The two 53 metre yachts were berthed side by side, providing a spectacular sight - and a spectacular task list for us! But the work was achieved without any hitches. Marine Results successfully tendered for the contracts on both yachts and was the company of choice by both captains. We carried out a complete mast re-fit on both yachts . “It was a big job,” said Marine Results’ Ed Danby. “On Jasali, one of the yachts we supplied and fitted a new custom extrusion, 50 metres in length. We also carried out a full service, including everything, from fitting new LED navigation lights to a rigging service in accordance with the OYS 8 year service.” |

Georgia and St Barths Bucket – 2010
Marine Results ability to react quickly to the worldwide service market has been proven once again whilst keeping the 48m sloop Georgia up and running during her busy world tour.
Following 2 mini re-fits in Palma and Florida, Georgia headed for St Barths Bucket regatta where Jon ran the foredeck crew whilst keeping an eye on all things aloft. |
|
 |
Ben and Giles were sailing on the 56m Perini Navi ‘Salute’ and Ed continued his role as race crew boss on the 47m sloop “Hyperion’. Georgia continued on to Costa Rica where the team were called on again for a fast repair to the boom and incorporated a 1 year OYS service to the rigging. |
